It was agaisn't Hawaiian law for men and women to eat together, the royalty of Hawaii also forbade the common people to eat certain delicacies, these ancient celebrations were know as 'Aha-Aina' a term for royal feast. When the Hawaiians changed their laws in 1819 at the command of King Kamehameha II when he stopped the old 'Kapu' system which stopped his people from eating in the same manner that he did. The term luau was born as the King consented to women being allow to feast in his company. The name luau comes from one of the favourite dishes where leaves from the taro plant where combined with chicken and cooked in coconut milk.
